The note

Everyone's talking about the AI wave. Almost nobody's talking about the boats. So I drew the boats, with an assist from Hokusai.

The story we keep telling is that the wave picks the winners: the big, the technical, the lucky. Get swept up or get buried.

I don't buy it. In the strip, both crews see the same wave, at the same time, in the same water. One rows away from it. One puts the robot on the oars and rows with it. That's not a superpower. That's a seating decision.

Here's the test I'd run on any business today, mine included: where does AI actually sit for you? On the horizon, where it's something you watch? Or in the boat, where it's something that rows? If it's been on the horizon for a year, that's not caution. That's the second boat.

The wave isn't coming. It's here. The only question left is what's in your boat.
